AFC Leopards sack coach Minnaert

The Belgian tactician joined the Big Cats early this year taking Ingwe to a joint top position for a few weeks in March

AFC Leopards have sacked coach Ivan Minnaert following a string of poor results, Goal can exclusively reveal.

The Belgian tactician joined the Big Cats early this year taking Ingwe to a joint top position for a few weeks in March before deteriorating to an unfamiliar position 10 after 23 matches of the league.

The decision to relieve the former Rayon Sport off his duties at the Den was arrived at by the club’s National Executive Committee sitting which on a letter dated August 31 asked the coach to hand over all the club’s property with immediate effect.

“You are hereby relieved off your duties as Head Coach with immediate effect and are advised to hand over all the club’s property in your possession to the Team Manager. You are advised to collect all your dues from the Secretariat on September 5, at 2pm,” the letter signed by the club’s Chairman Dan Mule and Secretary General Oscar Igaida in Goal’s possession read in parts.

Igaida further confirmed to Goal that as the club starts the search for a replacement, Ezekiel Akwana, who has been Minnaert’s assistant, has been elevated to the head coach position albeit on interim basis. “We had an agreement with the coach (Minnaert) but he has not done his job as was expected so we had no any other option other than relieving him off his duties. Ezekiel Akwana will now be the head coach in acting capacity.”

AFC Leopards have been bundled out of all other 2016 competitions save for the Kenyan Premier League after being knocked out of KPL Top 8 tournament and GOtv Shield.
