Ulinzi Stars assistant coach Benjamin Nyangweso, temporarily heading the bench, says the soldiers are very much still targeting to win the big double this season.

Nyangweso was reacting this week to the question of whether the Kenya Defence Forces side, currently placed fifth in the KPL table and 11 points adrift leaders Tusker, has given up on the league’s title race to concentrate on the GOtv Shield. Ulinzi are in the quarter-finals.

Last man standing

He retorted that while his team considered winning the GOtv Shield more realistic, they would continue to push for the KPL silverware until the last day, or the last man standing.

-We still have every chance of winning the Kenyan title, so why should we give up, because it is easier to win the domestic cup, the league race is very tight this season, and I have a feeling that a lot will change in the coming weeks. We are focusing on all the trophies that we can get our hands on right now, the league title being the most important of them, Nyangweso told the official kpl portal.

Matano getting better

Nyangweso, who is standing in for head coach Robert Matano who is ill further hinted that Matano may be back soon as he is getting better day by day.

-We have eight more games remaining and the coach (Matano) is getting better every day. He should be back soon. As long as we don’t have any more injuries, I am sure that we can give the other title contenders a run for their money, he said.

Ulinzi face giant-slayers Nzoia Sugar next month in their GOtv Shield quarter-final. They are scheduled to face Sony Sugar, Sofapaka and defending champions Gor Mahia in their next KPL matches.
