21 Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza combat. https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2024/01/23/21-israeli-soldiers-killed-in-gaza-combat/ https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2024/01/23/21-israeli-soldiers-killed-in-gaza-combat/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2024 08:16:49 +0000 https://mbaitufm.com/?p=13987 The Israeli army said hat 21 soldiers were killed during fighting in southern Gaza Strip. This was the deadliest day for Israeli forces since the start of their ground operation.

A spokesman Rear Adm. for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Daniel Hagari said two buildings collapsed on the soldiers after being hit by an RPG during a military operation.

He said the buildings exploded probably as result of mines the Israeli forces had placed there to demolish them.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press ahead until Israel crushes the ruling Hamas militant group and wins the freedom of over 100 hostages held captive in Gaza.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that it had been an “unbearably difficult morning” learning about the extent of the death toll.

His words to the hitman were, “put that woman down” and “finish her”. Muthinga’s plan failed when h met a policeman who pretended to be a hitman in Putman, at a hotel. The “hitman” agreed to ingest the family member with fentanyl.

The plan was to happen when Leonard was in Kenya and that was to be in January between 28th and 3rd February, 2024 so he would not be suspected.

Motorola wants you to wear its new bendable phone https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/26/13764/ https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/26/13764/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2023 12:38:57 +0000 https://mbaitufm.com/?p=13764 Motorola unveils new smartphone prototype. PHOTO/PCMag

Lenovo-owned Motorola has now unveiled a new shape-shifting phone prototype that can do more than just fold. It is an improved and refined design when compared to the foldable concept phone that Lenovo showcased a few years back.

Back in 2016, Lenovo introduced a concept foldable phone – the Lenovo CPlus, that can be worn around the wrist, and now, years later, in 2023, Motorola has come with a much more refined and improved device.

This prototype features a flexible display with multiple points across the screen, allowing users to not just fold, but also curl and wrap, into a stand or like a smartwatch. The display is a flexible OLED display panel with an FHD+ resolution, and the prototype has been dubbed an “adaptive display” smartphone.

The screen is 6.9″ large, similar to a normal Android smartphone that is now available in the market, and when curled up, the software within the device will automatically adjust the screen to 4.6″. To add, the initial Lenovo CPlus device had a 4.6″ display, but with very thick bezels.

The prototype also points out a feature that the device would support. While the device is curled up and positioned as a stand, users may just move away from the phone and allow the device to capture their picture. With generative theming, the device will be able to find a wallpaper that goes well with the outfit being worn, to match perfectly well when it is used as a smartwatch around the wrist.

As mentioned, this is just a prototype and there still haven’t been any official announcements from the brand’s side regarding the launch of such a device for the general public.

Impact of war on women and girls in Gaza https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/26/impact-of-war-on-women-and-girls-in-gaza/ https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/26/impact-of-war-on-women-and-girls-in-gaza/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2023 08:19:45 +0000 https://mbaitufm.com/?p=13749

More than 493,000 girls and women have been displaced from their homes in Gaza, as the war between Israel and Hamas escalates.

The United Nations Women, in a report last Friday, says the number could grow, if a ceasefire is not achieved soon, and their needs unmet.

The report further puts the number of women who have been widowed at 900, following the deaths of their male partners since the onset of the conflict.

“The significant, largely displaced population of women and girls, and new female-headed households, have unique and urgent needs and vulnerabilities that must be recognised and addressed,” the women’s rights body said.

So dire is the situation that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that thousands of pregnant women are at risk of health and maternal care complications.

So dire is the situation that the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that thousands of pregnant women are at risk of health and maternal care complications.

According to Women Deliver, a global body that advocates for gender equality and the health and rights of women, more than 37,000 pregnant women will be forced to give birth with no electricity or medical supplies in the coming months, risking their lives and health.

“It has become clear that the violence in Gaza is, in addition to a humanitarian crisis, an acute reproductive justice, rights, and health issue about which we cannot be silent. The violence and impact on women and girls in Gaza also make this a reproductive justice and health crisis,” Women Deliver said in a statement on Tuesday, October 24.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen to these women and their newborn babies. Our center is unusable and our options to provide referrals to hospitals are decreasing by the hour. I can’t stress enough how dire the situation is and how desperately we need humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza,” Ammal Awadallah, the Palestinian Family Planning and Protection Association (PFPPA) Executive Director is quoted as saying.

Alcohol consumption increases the risks of over 60 diseases. https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/24/alcohol-consumption-increases-the-risks-of-over-60-diseases/ https://mbaitufm.com/blog/2023/10/24/alcohol-consumption-increases-the-risks-of-over-60-diseases/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2023 12:29:47 +0000 https://mbaitufm.com/?p=13715 Even moderate drinking linked to a decline in brain health

Alcohol consumption is estimated to be responsible for about 3 million deaths worldwide each year, and it is increasing in many low- and middle-income countries such as China. The harmful effects of heavy drinking for certain diseases (such as liver cirrhosis, stroke and several types of cancer) are well known, but very few studies have systematically assessed the impact of alcohol use on an extensive range of diseases within the same population.

The study shows that alcohol use increases the risks of 61 diseases in men in China, including many non-fatal diseases not known to be alcohol-related due to limited previous evidence. The findings of this study demonstrate the influence that alcohol intake may have on risk of disease in populations around the world.

The researchers used data from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), a collaborative study of over 512,000 adults recruited during 2004-08 from ten diverse urban and rural areas across China. Study participants were interviewed about their lifestyle and behaviours, including detailed alcohol drinking patterns. About a third of men, but only 2% of women, drank alcohol regularly (ie at least once a week). The researchers comprehensively assessed the health effects of alcohol use on over 200 different diseases in men identified through linkage to hospital records over a period of about 12 years. Importantly, they also undertook a genetic analysis to clarify whether or not alcohol intake was responsible for causing disease.

Key findings:

• Among 207 diseases studied, self-reported alcohol intake was associated with higher risks of 61 diseases in men. This included 28 diseases previously established by the World Health Organization as alcohol-related, such as liver cirrhosis, stroke, and several gastrointestinal cancers, and 33 diseases not previously established as alcohol-related, such as gout, cataract, some fractures, and gastric ulcer;

• There were over 1.1 million hospitalisations recorded in the study, and men who had ever drank alcohol regularly had significantly higher risk of developing any disease and experienced more frequent stays in hospital, compared with men who had only drunk alcohol occasionally;

• Certain drinking patterns, such as drinking daily, drinking in heavy “binge” episodes, or drinking outside mealtimes, particularly increased the risks of certain diseases, particularly liver cirrhosis;

• In the genetic analyses, there was evidence for a dose-dependent causal effect on the identified alcohol-related diseases collectively, with every four drinks per day associated with a 14% higher risk of established alcohol-related diseases, 6% higher risk of diseases not previously known to be alcohol-related, and over two-fold higher risk of liver cirrhosis and gout;

• In the genetic analyses, higher alcohol intake was significantly associated with higher risk of stroke in a dose-response manner (consistent with previous findings in the CKB study), but showed no increased risk with ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Moreover, moderate drinking (ie one-two drinks/day) did not have any protective effects against IHD;

• As few women in China drink alcohol (less than 2% of women in the study drank regularly), women in this study provided a useful control group in the genetic analyses, which helped confirm that the excess disease risks in men were caused by drinking alcohol, not by some other mechanisms related to the genetic variants.

Pek Kei Im, a Research Fellow at Oxford Population Health and a lead author of the paper, said ‘Alcohol consumption is adversely related to a much wider range of diseases than has previously been established, and our findings show these associations are likely to be causal.’

Professor Liming Li, a senior author and CKB co-PI from Peking University, said ‘Levels of alcohol consumption are rising in China, particularly among men. This large collaborative study demonstrates a need to strengthen alcohol control policies in China.’

Iona Millwood, Associate Professor at Oxford Population Health and a senior author of the study, said ‘It is becoming clear that the harmful use of alcohol is one of the most important risk factors for poor health, both in China and globally.’

Professor Zhengming Chen, Richard Peto Professor of Epidemiology at Oxford Population Health and a senior author and CKB co-PI, said ‘This study provides important causal evidence of the scale of alcohol-related harms, which is critical to inform prevention strategies in different countries.’

In East Asian populations, there are common genetic variants that greatly reduce alcohol tolerability, because they cause an extremely unpleasant flushing reaction after drinking alcohol. People with these genetic variants tend to drink less alcohol and because these genetic variants are unrelated to other lifestyle factors (such as smoking or socioeconomic status), the researchers can use this information to more accurately assess the cause-and-effect relationships of alcohol with a wide range of diseases.
