EAC deploys 60 observers for Kenya elections

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 4 – The East African Community Election Observer Mission has been flagged off, three days to Kenya General Election.

The head of the mission Prof Edward Rugumayo told the press while dispatching 60 observers drawn from EAC member states that that the team will do due diligence in ensuring the elections slated for Tuesday are conducted in line with universally accepted principals of democracy and good governance.

“The mission will follow the campaigns; meet election officials, the populous, candidates and other stakeholders up to and beyond Election Day. Our objective is to monitor that the elections are credible, free and fair,” Rugumayo stated on Friday.

He said that the mission will release a preliminary report immediately after the polls before compiling a final report with recommendations from various stakeholders within two weeks after the elections.

He commended the electorate for maintaining peace thus far, noting that campaigns have been largely peaceful urging voters to maintain peace when they finally go to vote in the 40,833 polling stations spread across the country.

“I want to thank the people of Kenya who have conducted themselves with maturity in one of the most vibrant election campaigns this country has seen,” he said.

“I trust that this level of dignity, level mindedness, and peace will be upheld through the campaign period, the Election Day and thereafter,’ he added.

Other observation missions in the country include the African Union under the leadership of former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki and the European Union led by Marietje Schaake.
