Andre Onana’s turbulent spell at Manchester United has taken a new turn after the goalkeeper sealed a season-long loan move to Turkish giants Trabzonspor.

The Cameroonian’s future at Old Trafford had been hanging in the balance ever since United secured the services of highly-rated Belgian keeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp in a €21 million (£18.2m) deal, plus add-ons.

Onana, 29, arrived at United in 2023 from Inter Milan for €51 million, a move that promised stability between the posts. He capped his debut season with an FA Cup triumph, but erratic displays and reported clashes with manager Ruben Amorim quickly eroded the club’s patience.

His situation worsened last season after a hamstring injury ruled him out of pre-season. Upon return, he made a costly error during United’s shock League Cup exit to Grimsby, further straining relations.

The signing of Lammens left Onana surplus to requirements, paving the way for his exit. Confirming the deal, United released a statement:

“Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish Andre good luck.”

For Onana, the switch offers a chance at revival, while for United, it marks a decisive step toward a new era in goalkeeping.
