Kenya’s golden duo, Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, are set for a blockbuster clash in the women’s 5,000m final at the World Championships in Tokyo this Saturday.

Both athletes cruised through their heats at the National Stadium on Thursday, setting the stage for a rare head-to-head in what could be one of the highlights of the competition.

Kipyegon, fresh from securing the 1,500m crown earlier in the week, admitted the 5,000m was a different challenge. “It was my first 5,000m race of the season, and I’m happy with the result,” said the two-time Olympic champion, who also set a world record in the 1,500m at the Eugene Diamond League earlier this year. “I’ve recovered well from the 1,500m, so I’m ready and excited for Saturday.”

Chebet, meanwhile, arrives with history on her side. The reigning Olympic 10,000m champion became the first woman to dip under 14 minutes for 5,000m when she clocked 13:58.06 in Eugene in July. Already a silver and bronze medallist in previous world championships, Chebet is eyeing the gold that would complete her collection and against none other than her role model, Kipyegon.

The rivalry has added intrigue: the last time the two faced off was at the Paris Olympics, where Chebet struck gold and Kipyegon settled for silver. This time, they’ll also be joined by Agnes Ngetich, another Kenyan star and the third-fastest woman in history.

The challenge, however, won’t be purely domestic. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, a world champion in both the 5,000m (2022) and 10,000m (2023), will be hungry to reclaim glory after missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. She already has a bronze from the 10,000m in Tokyo and is eager to double up. “It was good for me to have a tactical race after the 10,000m,” Tsegay said, pointing to sharper readiness for the final.

With Kipyegon chasing a historic double, Chebet aiming for her first world 5,000m gold, and Tsegay desperate for redemption, Saturday’s showdown promises to be nothing short of explosive.
