A Kenya Junior School Education Assessment examiner has passed away at a marking centre in Machakos, bringing an abrupt halt to what colleagues described as his tireless service during the national grading exercise.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) confirmed that Nicodemus Mutuku, a senior examiner and team leader for the Creative Arts and Sports paper, collapsed and died on Monday morning at the Machakos Girls High School marking venue, where he had been working since November 7.
In a statement, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said Mutuku had been actively involved in the ongoing marking work until his unexpected death. Njengere noted that the veteran educator had built a distinguished career in national assessment, having served for years under the former Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) system before transitioning to the Competency-Based Curriculum.
Mutuku, who taught at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu, Makueni County, was remembered as a dependable leader whose experience had shaped the work of countless examiners.
“His commitment and professionalism were unmatched. The council has lost a dedicated officer who played a critical role in upholding the integrity of our assessments,” Njengere said.
KNEC added that Mutuku had shown unwavering dedication throughout the month-long marking period, guiding his team and ensuring work ran smoothly and to standard.
The council has conveyed condolences to his family, colleagues, and the education community, assuring that support will be extended to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
