Education Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Bitok has revealed that 14 students were among the victims of the devastating landslides that hit Elgeyo Marakwet County on Friday.

The disaster has so far claimed 26 lives, leaving several others injured and many still unaccounted for as rescue teams continue to comb through the debris.

“It’s heartbreaking to report that 14 of those who perished were learners. Our hearts go out to their families and everyone affected by this tragedy,” Dr. Bitok said.

He added that the government has intensified efforts to support the affected communities and ensure that education continues despite the calamity.

“Our priority now is to make sure that students in the affected areas are safe and able to proceed with their exams. We are working closely with security officers and local authorities to facilitate their evacuation and provide the necessary support,” he assured.

Authorities say search and rescue operations are still ongoing as families and officials continue to hope for positive outcomes.
