About 90 families have been forced out of their homes after the Nairobi City County Government ordered the immediate evacuation of a 10-storey residential building along Kabiria Road in Riruta Ward over serious structural safety concerns.

The evacuation followed an inspection by county officials, who reportedly identified extensive cracks and other structural defects that rendered the building unsafe for occupation.

Tenants said they were left scrambling to leave after being informed that the apartment was no longer safe, with some forced to abandon their personal belongings inside as they rushed to secure their safety.

Some residents expressed frustration over the short notice, saying they had little time to gather their possessions before leaving under police supervision.

“Some of us were still sleeping when notice came that we should leave the apartment. We left in a hurry with many of our belongings still remaining in the apartment,” one tenant said.

On Sunday, November 1, police officers were deployed around the premises to secure the building and prevent unauthorised entry.

The evacuation has once again drawn attention to concerns over the structural safety of residential buildings in Nairobi, particularly following a series of building collapses reported in recent times.
