The Senate is set for a high-stakes session this afternoon as it begins proceedings on the impeachment of Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, just a day after his dramatic ouster by the County Assembly.
In a Gazette notice issued on Thursday, November 27, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the House will convene at 2:30 p.m. to deliberate on the charges brought against the governor. The sitting is anchored in Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Governments Act, and Senate Standing Orders, which outline the process for removing a county chief from office.
Governor Nyaribo was impeached on November 25 after 23 out of 31 MCAs present supported the motion seeking his removal. Although four other MCAs attempted to join the vote through written requests, their input was not factored into the final count.
The impeachment motion, tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accuses Nyaribo of abusing his authority, disregarding legal procedures, and conducting county operations through unofficial “Bunge Mashinani” forums sessions that reportedly had no lawful recognition.
Additionally, the governor is alleged to have improperly authorized county funds to facilitate the endorsement of Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister during a period of leadership instability within the assembly.
This afternoon’s Senate session will determine whether the accusations hold sufficient weight to seal Nyaribo’s fate as governor or set the stage for his reinstatement.
