The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched an in-depth probe into the road crash that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway in Naivasha.

In a statement released on Monday, the DCI said the fatal collision occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area. The crash involved a private vehicle driven by Jirongo and a public service bus belonging to Climax Company Limited. Initial reports indicate the accident happened at about 2:19 a.m. and resulted in a severe head-on impact.

Investigators noted that the force of the collision pushed Jirongo’s vehicle roughly 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away. Following the incident, a multi-agency team made up of homicide detectives and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory was dispatched to the scene to document evidence and collect exhibits.

As part of the inquiry, detectives obtained and analysed CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station, which has proved crucial in reconstructing Jirongo’s final moments. The footage shows his vehicle entering the station shortly before the crash without stopping to refuel. Moments later, the car briefly halted at the exit before turning back towards Nairobi. Seconds after rejoining the highway, the bus collided with his vehicle.

The DCI says the video provides a detailed timeline leading up to the crash and will form a central part of the investigation. Meanwhile, the bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has already been questioned by police. He recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base and was later released on cash bail as investigations into a possible charge of causing death by dangerous driving continue.

Authorities say further forensic analysis and witness accounts will help determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
