Detectives have indicated that early investigations into the death of former Cabinet minister and long-serving politician Cyrus Jirongo point to a road traffic accident, with no signs so far of criminal involvement.

In an update issued on Monday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Jirongo lost his life on the night of December 13, 2025, following a crash at Karai along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

The agency noted that investigators moved in immediately after the incident to piece together what happened. A specialised, multi-agency team was assembled to handle the probe, bringing together homicide detectives, intelligence officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory.

According to the DCI, the team has already examined the scene, collected and secured key exhibits, and documented all relevant physical evidence. As part of the inquiry, CCTV footage from a nearby Egol petrol station was retrieved and is currently undergoing detailed forensic analysis.

Investigators have also obtained the passenger manifest from the bus involved, alongside videos recorded by members of the public at the scene, all of which are being analysed to reconstruct the final moments leading to the crash.

At this stage, the DCI says the evidence supports the conclusion that Jirongo’s death resulted from a traffic accident, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish all contributing factors.
