Sudan’s military leader, Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan has appealed directly to Donald Trump to step in and help end Sudan’s prolonged conflict, urging Washington to play a more assertive role in pushing the warring parties toward peace.

In an opinion piece published by The Wall Street Journal, Burhan said many Sudanese citizens now believe that Trump’s intervention could shift the course of the war, which has dragged on since April 2023 between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Burhan noted that earlier mediation attempts have collapsed despite the devastating scale of the conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced millions, and triggered one of the world’s worst hunger and humanitarian crises.

He argued that Trump’s recent show of interest following a push from Mohammed bin Salman has raised hopes among Sudanese citizens who view the former U.S. president as decisive and willing to confront international actors believed to be fueling the conflict.

Although Burhan avoided naming specific countries, he has previously accused the United Arab Emirates of supporting the RSF a claim the UAE has consistently denied.

Burhan stressed that Sudan urgently needs strong, coordinated international action to stop the war and restore stability, saying the country is looking to Washington to “take the next step” toward a genuine peace effort.
