The High Court in Kibera has directed that a fresh mental assessment be conducted on Kennedy Kalombotole, a suspect linked to two murders that occurred at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Lady Justice Diana Kavedza on Thursday ordered that a psychiatrist from KNH be allowed access to the Nairobi Remand Prison to carry out a second evaluation of Kalombotole’s mental condition. The outcome of the assessment will determine whether he is fit to stand trial.

Kalombotole, who had been receiving treatment at KNH since December 1, 2024, is accused of killing fellow patient Edward Maingi Ndegwa on July 11, 2025, at Ward 7B, Group C (Male).

In her directive, Justice Kavedza further instructed prison authorities to ensure that the accused continues to receive treatment for diabetes and other medical conditions while in custody.

During the proceedings, Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichui told the court that the second mental evaluation was necessary to confirm the suspect’s mental fitness before formal murder charges could proceed.

The case will be mentioned on November 13, 2025, when the court is expected to review the psychiatric report and decide whether Kalombotole is fit to face trial.
