Former Alego Usonga MP Otieno Mak’onyango has died while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital, bringing to an end the life of a former legislator who also played a role in Kenya’s second liberation struggle.
Mak’onyango passed away on the night of Sunday, October 25, according to an announcement by his successor, Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi.
In a statement mourning the former lawmaker, Atandi described his death as a loss to the constituency, noting that his leadership and reforms during his time in Parliament would remain part of its political history.
“We have this evening lost Hon. Otieno Makonyango, the fourth Member of Parliament for Alego Usonga Constituency, who served from 1992 to 1997, while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital,” Atandi said.
He extended his condolences to Mak’onyango’s family, friends and residents of Alego Usonga, calling on them to find comfort during the difficult period.
The former MP had reportedly suffered a stroke on October 3, 2026, and was initially admitted to a hospital in Ngong Town, where he received treatment in the High Dependency Unit (HDU). He was later transferred to Nairobi Hospital as his treatment continued.
Following his hospitalisation, an appeal for financial support was launched to help his family meet the growing costs of his medical care.
Before entering elective politics, Mak’onyango worked as a journalist and became one of the figures associated with Kenya’s second liberation struggle. He later represented Alego Usonga in Parliament from 1992 to 1997, serving as the constituency’s fourth MP.
His death has prompted tributes from local leadership, with Atandi remembering him as a former representative whose contribution would remain part of Alego Usonga’s history.
