Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious concerns about the integrity of Kenya’s war on drugs, suggesting that the fight is compromised from within the highest levels of government.
Addressing worshippers in Ol Jorook, Nyandarua County, Gachagua claimed that influential figures within President William Ruto’s Cabinet are themselves entangled in the drug trade. Although he did not disclose names, he alleged that two Cabinet Secretaries are key players in drug trafficking networks.
“With drug barons sitting at the decision-making table, who will protect our youth?” Gachagua asked, referencing his ouster from office last October. He lamented that the next generation is now left to rely on faith rather than leadership for protection against the growing menace of substance abuse.
His remarks come at a time when questions are mounting over the sincerity and effectiveness of government-led campaigns targeting drug and alcohol abuse among young people.
