Police have launched a manhunt for two men who allegedly stormed a women’s savings group meeting in Nairobi’s Saika estate and made away with cash and a mobile phone during a daytime robbery.
The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, when members of the Queen’s Women Chama had convened for their regular fortnightly meeting inside a salon.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the two suspects entered the premises while the meeting was underway. One of the men reportedly pulled out a pistol from his waistband and ordered those present to hand over their money and mobile phones, while his accomplice stood watch at the entrance. Police said the second suspect was not armed.
The attackers escaped with Sh50,000 in cash that had been placed on a table for the group’s activities, as well as a Samsung Galaxy A17 mobile phone belonging to one of the members.
Officers responded to the scene shortly after the robbery and confirmed the incident before launching investigations.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said detectives are pursuing crucial leads as they work to identify and arrest the suspects.
Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers also visited the salon to collect and process forensic evidence that could assist with the investigation.
No one was injured during the robbery.
Meanwhile, security camera footage captured the dramatic incident, showing the two men arriving at the salon before one of them produced a pistol and cocked it, sending the women into panic. The suspect was then seen grabbing a mobile phone and other valuables as those inside screamed in fear before the pair fled the scene.
Investigations into the robbery are ongoing.
