Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has picked Danish Otieno Onyango as her nominee for deputy governor, moving to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Joseph Oyugi Magwanga in February.

In a statement issued on March 16, Wanga said Onyango’s nomination has been forwarded for vetting and approval by the county assembly, as required by law. If approved, he will take up the deputy governor role while continuing to serve as the County Executive Committee member for Roads and Public Works.

The governor pointed to Onyango’s long track record in public service, spanning more than 20 years, as a key reason behind the decision. She credited him with overseeing major improvements in the county’s road infrastructure, including the construction of hundreds of kilometres of new roads and the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing ones, projects that have boosted access to essential services and economic hubs.

Wanga expressed confidence that his experience and performance in the current administration position him well to take on the expanded leadership role.

Onyango, who comes from Kabondo Kasipul constituency, holds academic qualifications in economics, political science and development studies, including a master’s degree in the field.

His nomination now awaits the county assembly’s decision before he can formally assume office.
