The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has issued a stern rebuke following chaotic scenes reported in parts of the country during Thursday’s by-elections, saying the disruptions pose a serious threat to the integrity of the polls.

In a strongly worded statement, Commission Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said IEBC was deeply disturbed by accounts of voter intimidation, violent confrontations, and interference with normal polling operations. He noted that such behaviour blatantly contradicts Article 81(e) of the Constitution, which guarantees elections free from fear, coercion or corruption.

The commission further pointed out that the incidents violate provisions within the Elections Act, Election Offences Act, and the Elections (General) Regulations, which set clear guidelines for conduct during an election period.

Ethekon also addressed allegations that some politicians and prominent figures may have played a role in heightening tensions in certain hotspots. He criticised the conduct, calling it a reckless abuse of influence that has no place in a democratic process.

“Any suggestion that political actors or public figures are fuelling tension is deeply troubling. This kind of behaviour is illegal, irresponsible, and cannot be tolerated,” read the statement.

As polling officially ended, the IEBC reminded the public that only accredited individuals are permitted inside polling stations during counting and at tallying centres during results verification.
