The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into the death of a robbery with violence suspect who reportedly took his own life while in custody at the Kisumu Central Police Station last week.
IPOA’s Nyanza Regional Coordinator, Paul Murkomen, confirmed that the authority has already recorded statements from officers who were on duty during the incident. He noted that the inquiry will seek to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
Murkomen said IPOA is also working to reach the family of the deceased, identified as Kelvin Oduor, commonly known as Kevo, to assist in the ongoing investigation. He explained that the probe aims to determine whether Oduor’s death was indeed a case of suicide or if any elements of foul play were involved.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out to establish the precise cause of death.
Oduor had been arrested on Monday, October 27, in connection with a robbery with violence case and was in custody under a 14-day remand order awaiting his next court appearance.
The investigation is part of IPOA’s mandate to ensure accountability and transparency in police operations, particularly in cases involving deaths in custody.
