The Kenya Defence Forces has pushed back against allegations that some of its officers siphoned off part of a massive methamphetamine haul seized during a high-stakes multi-agency operation in late October.

In a detailed statement released on Tuesday, KDF addressed growing speculation surrounding the October 25 operation, in which security teams intercepted a dhow off the Kenyan coastline carrying 1,024 kilograms of crystal meth, estimated at Ksh8.2 billion.

The mission, executed jointly by the Kenya Navy, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, and NACADA, led to the arrest of six Iranian nationals believed to have been transporting the narcotics. The vessel had reportedly been on the radar of regional and international intelligence partners as it sailed through the western Indian Ocean.

According to KDF, the drugs were offloaded under the watch of a composite security team and transported to shore under strict supervision.

Despite this, rumours soon began circulating that a section of the personnel involved had pocketed a portion of the narcotics.

“It has been alleged that some officers stole part of the shipment as it was being offloaded,” the military acknowledged. “We wish to clarify that the entire 1,024 kilograms remains secure, intact, and under continuous protection by a multi-agency team.”

The Defence Forces noted that investigations into the claims are ongoing, stressing that any officer found culpable will face decisive disciplinary action.
