Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has accused the government of stripping him of his security team just hours before voters in Malava head to the polls for a crucial by-election.

In a video posted on his social media platforms, Khalwale suggested the move was politically motivated, alleging that his support for an Opposition candidate in the race may have triggered the withdrawal. Despite the development, the Senate Majority Whip said he remained composed and confident in the democratic process.

He urged residents to vote peacefully and insisted that Malava’s choice must be respected.
“Our people know their rights. They will vote without fear. My security has been taken away abruptly, but I am still confident Malava will stand firm,” he said.

Khalwale called on all state actors involved in the election to uphold transparency and avoid actions that could heighten tension. He reminded authorities that elections naturally produce both winners and losers and should not prompt “panic-driven tactics.”

The Senator further claimed that Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was also affected by similar security withdrawals.
“I am entitled to six officers. Where are they? What message is being sent?” he questioned, adding that any unrest would likely arise from resisting intimidation rather than initiating violence.

He also cautioned young people allegedly ferried into the county, warning that they could be unknowingly exposing themselves to danger.

But Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen rejected the narrative of political victimisation. Speaking in Kasipul, Murkomen confirmed that the security details of several VIPs including Governor Natembeya had indeed been withdrawn, but insisted the decision followed a National Police Service report flagging concerns over the behaviour of some officers assigned to high-profile individuals.
