The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested six former sports officials and contractors in connection with the controversial multi-million-shilling tender linked to Kenya’s preparations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
Among those taken into custody are former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia, a former Senior Principal Finance Officer in the Ministry of Sports, a former Principal Accountant in the ministry and a former Senior Superintendent Engineer at Sports Kenya.
The arrests came shortly after Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga approved graft-related charges against the officials and four businessmen implicated in the case.
The suspects are accused of involvement in the alleged misappropriation of Ksh330 million that had been set aside for Kenya’s preparations to host the 2018 CHAN tournament.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, the DPP said five companies had also been charged over the alleged financial misconduct.
Ingonga said the case followed investigations by the EACC, whose inquiry file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and further guidance.
The DPP said an independent assessment of the evidence established sufficient grounds to proceed with the prosecution of the suspects and the companies.
The accused face several charges, including abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, failure to comply with procurement laws, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
