The long-awaited dualling of the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road is finally taking shape, promising to ease the chronic traffic congestion that has long plagued commuters between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, the project will transform the busy stretch commonly known as Kiambu Road from a two-lane single carriageway into a four-lane dual carriageway. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), which is overseeing the works, said the new design will feature two-lane service roads and pedestrian walkways on both sides to enhance accessibility and safety.

The project will also involve the construction of several new bridges and interchanges to improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks. Key bridges will be built at Muthaiga Golf Club Spur, Mua Road Overpass, DCI Overpass, Coffee Garden U-turn, Tala Road Overpass, Ridgeways U-turn Underpass, Runda U-turn, and Kirigiti Junction.

In addition, major interchanges will be set up at Kamiti Road, Banana Road, and the Northern Bypass intersections with Kiambu Road.

KeNHA further confirmed that six footbridges will be erected at various points along the highway to improve pedestrian safety. The main trunk road will connect Muthaiga–Kirigiti Junction, Kirigiti Junction–Kiambu Town–Governor’s Office, and Governor’s Office–Ndumberi–Sasini.

The project will also feature the construction of bypasses and spur roads to improve connectivity within Kiambu County. Among these are the Githunguri Road–Sasini–Boma Road Bypass and the Riabai–Kiriguini B Road.

Spur roads — smaller roads branching off the main highway will include Ridgeways Road (linking Kiambu Road to Thika Road at Roasters), Evergreen–UN Avenue through Runda, Wambui Road, Muthaiga North, Mua Park Road/Serengeti Avenue, KIST Junction–Kamiti Road, and Boma Road–Kirigiti Junction, along with access roads to key public institutions and settlements.

Once complete, the upgraded road is expected to significantly cut travel time, open up Kiambu’s growing suburbs, and boost economic activity between the two counties.
