Tensions are rising within Kenya’s political circles following remarks made by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah about Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, wife to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a sharp rebuke, Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) officials from Murang’a County have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Kikuyu MP, demanding a retraction and public apology. They claim that Ichung’wah’s comments which implied that Gachagua was struggling in his marriage and being influenced by his wife crossed the line of decency and respect.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, July 23, the DCP officials condemned the remarks, arguing that they were not only disrespectful but also in conflict with cultural and moral expectations of leadership. They warned that failure to apologize would prompt legal action against the Majority Leader.
“As the DCP fraternity in Murang’a, we expect nothing short of a full withdrawal and apology. Otherwise, we will move to court,” said one of the party officials, adding that elders should also take part in addressing the matter through cultural channels.
Criticism extended beyond politics, with the officials calling on human rights organizations, the international community, and fellow leaders to speak out. They warned that such statements could silence and intimidate women in public service and leadership.
“The role of leaders is to inspire, not to ridicule or instill fear. What we’ve witnessed is not only an attack on a person but an affront to values we hold dear,” one official noted, urging institutions to stand up for dignity in leadership discourse.
Public reaction has been swift, with a segment of Kenyans on social media expressing outrage over Ichung’wah’s remarks, calling them reckless and uncalled for. Many argued that while political criticism is expected, family members especially spouses should be off-limits.
Pastor Dorcas, who recently returned from a two-month U.S. tour alongside her husband, has since responded, brushing off the allegations and affirming Gachagua’s independence and strength of character. “It is almost impossible to control him,” she said, dismissing the idea that she holds undue influence over the former Deputy President.
As the deadline for Ichung’wah’s response nears, the standoff continues to fuel debate over decorum, respect, and gender dynamics in Kenya’s political arena.
