Parents have been cautioned against giving underage children access to their vehicles, with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reminding motorists that allowing minors to drive is an offence under Kenyan law.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, the authority urged parents to keep vehicle keys out of reach of children below the age of 18, even in cases where the minors have some driving skills.

NTSA clarified that the legal minimum driving age in Kenya is 18 years and that anyone operating a motor vehicle must also hold a valid driving licence.

“Don’t let your child become the next statistic. The minimum driving age in Kenya is 18 years. Allowing, or failing to prevent, an underage or unlicensed person from driving is an offence,” the authority stated.

The transport regulator further urged parents to educate their children on the dangers and consequences of underage driving, noting that road crashes can have devastating effects.

It also called on vehicle owners to monitor the use of their cars and remain aware of their whereabouts at all times to promote accountability and prevent unauthorised access.

“Hold a road safety talk: Have a candid conversation with your children. Ensure they understand the consequences of underage driving and the devastating impact of road traffic crashes. Monitor vehicle use: Know exactly where your vehicles are at all times,” NTSA added.

The warning comes as authorities step up road safety awareness ahead of the festive season, a period typically characterised by increased travel and traffic volumes.
