Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has stepped down as Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) following public outrage over controversial remarks he made about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Governor Kahiga, who came under heavy criticism on Tuesday for comments perceived as insensitive and celebratory toward Raila’s death, announced his resignation and issued a public apology on Wednesday.
Speaking during a press briefing, Kahiga said his remarks had been taken out of context but nonetheless accepted full responsibility for his words. He apologised to the Odinga family, the ODM party, his fellow governors, and the people of Nyanza, calling his earlier comments “regrettable and personal.”
