Media personality Oga Obinna has emerged victorious in a defamation case against Radio Africa Group, with the court ordering the media house to pay him Ksh6.1 million in damages.

Announcing the outcome through his social media pages, Obinna revealed that he had taken legal action last year after a socialite appeared on Massawe Japanni’s show on Radio Jambo and made false and damaging statements about him.

According to Obinna, the remarks were broadcast without any attempt by the show’s host or producers to verify their authenticity. He lamented that the episode triggered a wave of online attacks and ridicule, deeply affecting both his public image and personal life.

In the lawsuit, Radio Africa Group, Massawe Japanni, and the socialite were named as defendants. “We filed the defamation case about a year ago and today, justice has been served,” Obinna stated. “The guest went on air and spread lies about me, despite the fact that we have never even met. Unfortunately, the show’s team never sought evidence before airing those claims.”

He further expressed disappointment that despite having previously worked with Massawe at QFM and within the same media group, no effort was made to cross-check the allegations directly with him.

Obinna said the incident led to a serious dent in his brand reputation and public perception, yet no apology was ever issued by the parties involved.

He also noted that the socialite at the center of the controversy failed to appear in court despite multiple summonses and is now said to be in hiding.

Delivering the ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Edward Too not only awarded damages to Obinna but also issued an injunction preventing the defendants from making or publishing any further defamatory statements against him.

The decision marks a significant win for Obinna, who described the judgment as a reminder that “media freedom must go hand in hand with responsibility.”
