Residents of Mwea-West in Kirinyaga County are rallying for the establishment of a permanent police station in their area following the unexpected closure of the Riandira Police Post. The facility, which had served as a security hub since 2018, was shut down after a dispute over rent arrears amounting to KSh 2 million.

For years, the structure initially provided by a local landlord housed six officers, offering much-needed security to the community. However, after the landlord’s passing, the officers were reportedly informed they would need to begin paying rent, leading to the financial standoff that ultimately forced them out.

Concerned residents now fear the absence of law enforcement could leave the region vulnerable, with the nearest police station located four kilometers away. Community leaders and local stakeholders are urging authorities to intervene and establish a permanent, government-funded police station to ensure long-term security.

“This situation has exposed the instability of our security setup,” one resident remarked. “We need a dedicated, permanent police station—not a temporary arrangement that can be taken away at any moment.”

As the community awaits official action, the incident has reignited discussions about the need for structured and sustainable policing solutions in rural areas.
