President William Ruto has reached out to the family of the late Albert Ojwang’, offering financial assistance in the wake of the young teacher and blogger’s controversial death while in police custody.
The Head of State, in a personal phone call to Ojwang’s father, Meshack Ojwang, expressed his condolences and pledged Sh2 million to aid with funeral preparations and urgent family needs. The gesture follows mounting public anger over the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s final hours at Nairobi Central Police Station, where he died after being arrested by DCI officers.
Ojwang, 31, had traveled from Nairobi to his rural home in Homa Bay to visit his parents before he was picked up by police. Days later, news broke of his death in custody an incident that has since triggered national protests, widespread condemnation, and calls for justice.
On Monday, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga visited the Ojwang’ family home in Kokwanyo to pay her respects. During the visit, she announced a series of interventions aimed at supporting the grieving household.
The county will construct a two-bedroom house for the family, estimated at Sh1.5 million, with the governor promising it would be completed before Ojwang’s burial. She also revealed that electricity would be installed at the home by June 17 and that a new water point would be established to serve both the family and neighboring residents.
“This is not just about mourning Albert, but standing with a family that has suffered a deep injustice,” said Governor Wanga. “We must also continue demanding answers.”
