The Wiper Democratic Movement has officially changed its name to the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF), according to an announcement by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu.
In a gazette notice, Nderitu confirmed the name change and invited public input on the matter. “In exercise of the power conferred by Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) intends to change its party name to Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF),” the notice reads.
Anyone with objections has seven days from the date of publication to submit written memoranda to the Registrar’s office.
The party, closely associated with former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, has undergone several identity changes since its formation. It was founded in 2006 as ODM–Kenya following the 2005 constitutional referendum. In 2011, it rebranded to Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM–K) to distinguish itself from Raila Odinga’s ODM faction.
A decade later, in 2021, the party dropped the “Kenya” suffix and adopted the simpler Wiper Democratic Movement before this latest transition to Wiper Patriotic Front.
