A suspected case of self-defense has taken a deadly turn in Nyabeda village, Rarieda sub-county, Siaya County, after a man was arrested on suspicion of murder following a violent confrontation with an alleged intruder in his home.

According to police reports, the incident unfolded in the early hours of July 31, when the homeowner who was alone at the time claimed he was awakened by a disturbance outside his house. Upon investigating, he allegedly encountered a man attempting to break in.

The homeowner told police that a physical struggle broke out between him and the intruder, whom he identified only as “Davie.” During the altercation, he reportedly sustained injuries to his head, hands, and legs but managed to subdue the intruder.

Police say the situation then escalated drastically. After overpowering the alleged intruder, the homeowner tied his hands and legs using a sisal rope and proceeded to beat him severely. The man succumbed to the injuries at the scene.

When officers arrived, they found the lifeless body still bound and bearing multiple injuries, particularly on the left side of the head and face. Preliminary investigations suggest the man was struck with a blunt object. Police recovered a hammer and a car wheel spanner at the scene, both believed to have been used during the fatal assault.

Authorities have since taken the homeowner into custody as investigations continue. While the man claims he acted in self-defense, the nature and extent of force used have raised legal and ethical questions about the boundary between self-protection and excessive violence.

Siaya County police have launched a full investigation to establish the facts surrounding the fatal encounter, including whether the force used was proportional and justified under the circumstances.
