The government has projected that the Raila Odinga Talanta International Stadium will be ready by the end of July 2026, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya made the announcement after touring the facility on June 23, where he reviewed the progress of ongoing construction works.
Mvurya noted that the project has reached an advanced stage, with approximately 91 per cent of the work already completed. He expressed confidence that the remaining activities would be finalized within the planned timelines ahead of inspections by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
According to the CS, the bulk of the major construction works is expected to be substantially completed by the close of July, paving the way for final preparations and compliance assessments.
Beyond the main structure, efforts are also underway to ensure the stadium meets international football standards. These include continuous turf maintenance, landscaping, and improvements to the training grounds associated with the facility.
As part of the broader infrastructure programme, Mvurya also officially commissioned the construction of two additional training pitches, while confirming that a third training ground is approaching completion.
The stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s hosting plans for AFCON 2027, with authorities racing to ensure all sporting facilities meet CAF requirements well ahead of the tournament.
