President William Ruto has extended Kenya’s condolences to the people and leadership of Qatar following the death of the country’s former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away aged 74.

In a message addressed to the reigning Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Ruto described the late leader as a transformative statesman whose leadership played a pivotal role in shaping modern Qatar.

The President expressed sympathy on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, offering condolences to the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar during their time of mourning.

Ruto noted that Sheikh Hamad’s tenure ushered in a period of significant national growth, saying his vision laid the foundation for Qatar’s emergence as a global economic and diplomatic powerhouse. He also prayed for strength and comfort for the country’s leadership and citizens as they grieve.

Sheikh Hamad served as Qatar’s Emir from 1995 to 2013, overseeing sweeping economic reforms fueled by the country’s vast natural gas resources. His administration is widely credited with transforming Qatar into one of the world’s richest nations and a leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
