Police have launched a search for five suspects accused of robbery with violence who escaped from Limuru Police Station in Kiambu County following a confrontation with officers.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at approximately 11pm on Wednesday, November 4, when officers opened the male cells to move 10 detainees into an inner holding room.

However, the transfer reportedly turned chaotic after some of the suspects confronted the officers and attempted to force their way out of custody.

Officers on duty are said to have raised the alarm and called for backup after realising they were being overpowered by the detainees.

The situation reportedly worsened when additional officers arrived to assist, with the fleeing suspects allegedly attacking some of them during the confrontation.

Following the escape, a team of Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from the headquarters in Nairobi was dispatched to support efforts to track down the missing suspects.

The incident has renewed concerns over security at police detention facilities, coming amid a series of reported escapes from police custody across the country.

In a similar incident three weeks ago, four suspects escaped from Itabua Police Station in Embu County after allegedly breaking through a wall of their holding cell.

The four, who escaped on October 24, 2026, were being held over separate cases involving murder, robbery with violence and theft.

The latest incident adds to growing scrutiny of police station security and the measures in place to prevent suspects from escaping while in custody.
