Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has indicated that he intends to step down from the country’s top military position within the coming months, bringing his two-year tenure to a possible close.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, Muhoozi said he believed he had fulfilled the responsibilities entrusted to him by God and was now preparing to hand over command to another qualified military officer.
He further revealed that he intends to dedicate his life to Christ after leaving the position.
However, the military chief clarified that his exit would not be immediate, assuring Ugandans that he would remain in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for at least another year.
In separate remarks, Muhoozi also turned his attention to the welfare of military personnel, pledging to improve the living conditions of ordinary soldiers before his eventual departure.
He identified better accommodation for troops as one of the areas requiring attention and proposed a substantial salary increment for junior officers.
Muhoozi described UPDF soldiers as his heroes, reaffirming his commitment to addressing their welfare concerns during the remaining period of his service.
