Monaco have taken an early lead at the top of Ligue 1 after German forward Paris Brunner scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Marseille on Sunday.
The result leaves Monaco as the only team to maintain a perfect record after the opening two matches of the French top flight.
Elsewhere, former Chelsea manager Lionel Rosenior marked his start at Paris FC with an impressive 3-0 home victory over Nice.
Brunner was the difference for Monaco, opening the scoring in the 13th minute when he rose to head in captain Aleksandr Golovin’s cross from the right.
The 20-year-old struck again nine minutes into the second half, cutting between Marseille defenders Geoffrey Kondogbia and CJ Egan-Riley before firing past goalkeeper Jeffrey De Lange.
Monaco coach Filipe Luis praised Brunner’s attitude and development, saying the young forward has consistently shown his desire to make an impact both during matches and in training.
“Since I joined, he’s been the type of player who expresses himself on the pitch, in training, with goals, pressing, tracking back — he wants to learn,” Luis said.
The coach challenged Brunner to maintain the same ambition and intensity as he continues his development.
“As long as he keeps doing that, he’ll be there. He’s very young, I’m really happy with the way he played,” Luis added.
Luis also highlighted the youngster’s passion for the game, saying his hunger and commitment are qualities he values.
“But the most important thing is that he remains ambitious, passionate, because he is passionate when he plays and I love that,” he said.
With Brunner already making his mark and Monaco sitting at the summit, the French side have made a strong statement at the beginning of the new Ligue 1 campaign.
