Students at Chebwagan Boys High School in Kericho have been sent home after unrest forced the indefinite closure of the institution, barely days after schools reopened for first term.

Education officials in Kericho ordered the shutdown following protests that erupted on the night of Sunday, January 11. The County Director of Education said the decision was taken to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating further.

Preliminary reports indicate that the demonstrations were triggered by dissatisfaction among learners, particularly Form Four students, over what they claim was poor feeding during the period they sat the 2025 KCSE examinations. Discontent over the school’s leadership and last year’s unsatisfactory exam performance is also believed to have contributed to the tension.

While details of the incident remain scanty, it has not been confirmed whether school property was vandalised during the unrest. Residents living near the school reportedly rushed to the compound after learning of the disturbances, in an effort to help contain the situation and avert possible destruction.

The school management has not yet issued an official statement, leaving uncertainty over when learning will resume. The incident comes just a week into the new term, after a long end-year holiday for students nationwide.
