Chief Justice Martha Koome has urged the National Heroes Council to shift its focus towards honoring Kenya’s heroes and heroines while they are still alive, ensuring their efforts are acknowledged and celebrated in real time.

Speaking on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony of Abdullah Kassim as a new member of the Council, CJ Koome emphasized the importance of timely recognition for those who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation.

“As a country, we must make it a priority to appreciate our heroes during their lifetime. Let them feel the nation’s gratitude while they are still with us,” she said. “This not only affirms their value to society but also nurtures a culture rooted in appreciation and national pride.”

The Chief Justice further highlighted the need to expand the definition of heroism beyond historical figures and political icons, pointing to everyday Kenyans whose quiet acts of courage and service make a difference in their communities.

“There are countless unsung heroes whose names may never make headlines, but whose compassion and selflessness are shaping lives daily. They, too, deserve to be seen and celebrated,” she noted.

Koome expressed full confidence in the newly reconstituted Council and called on its members to uphold high standards of integrity and service in their mandate.

“As you take up this noble responsibility, may you do so with humility, courage, and a commitment to excellence. The Judiciary stands ready to support your work as we jointly uphold the spirit of nationhood and service,” she concluded.
