Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya has officially handed over the newly completed Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County to the National Celebrations Steering Committee, setting the stage for this year’s Mashujaa Day festivities.

The handover marks the completion of the stadium’s main structural works, which have been underway for the past three months in readiness for the national event.

Receiving the symbolic key on behalf of the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Kodeck Makori, the alternate representative for the Principal Secretary, said preparations for the celebrations would begin immediately. He added that the facility will later be transferred to the Kitui County Government for public use once the national event concludes.

Speaking after inspecting the venue, CS Mvurya expressed confidence in the quality of work delivered by the contractor, noting that the stadium now meets national standards required to host major functions. He particularly commended the progress on the 885-meter perimeter wall, which is nearing completion.

Mvurya further confirmed that his ministry would return to the site after the October 20 celebrations to finalize remaining installations and upgrade the stadium to international sporting standards.

Several complementary infrastructure projects are also being fast-tracked to ensure a seamless celebration, including the Ithookwe Airstrip, the Kitui State Lounge, and the tarmacking of key access roads around Kitui town. The combined cost of these developments exceeds Ksh 2 billion.

The newly built Ithookwe Stadium is scheduled to officially open on Friday, October 17, 2025, symbolizing a major infrastructural milestone for Kitui County and a source of pride for the residents ahead of the national celebrations.
