The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing renewed political uncertainty following a dramatic decision by the government to suspend the political party led by former president Joseph Kabila, intensifying speculation over his possible return to the national stage.

Kabila, who ruled for nearly two decades before stepping down in 2019, has remained largely silent in recent years. But tensions have flared after a series of government actions including raids on properties linked to the former head of state and an official order halting operations of his People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD) nationwide.

Authorities have linked the decision to what they describe as increased political activity by Kabila. The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the former president’s actions risked undermining national stability, without offering detailed evidence.

Current president Félix Tshisekedi has gone further, accusing Kabila of attempting to incite rebellion and aligning himself with forces hostile to the government, including the M23 rebel group currently active in the east.

Though Kabila left the country ahead of the 2023 elections, his team has hinted at a comeback. A message shared by his staff earlier this month stated he intended to return, citing threats to the nation’s future. Rumors have since swirled over whether he is already back in the country possibly in Goma though no official confirmation has been made.

The government’s sweeping suspension of the PPRD signals a growing rift between the country’s two most influential political figures. As the situation unfolds, many fear that Congo’s fragile political balance could tip further amid uncertainty over Kabila’s next move.
