Police in Diani, Kwale County, are preparing to deport a Dutch national, Elwin Ter Horst, who was captured on video verbally abusing and spitting at police officers inside Diani Police Station.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage online, shows Horst who appeared intoxicated hurling insults and spitting mucus at an officer during a confrontation at the station.
Authorities say Horst was arrested on Tuesday evening for allegedly assaulting a civilian, damaging property, causing a disturbance, and being in possession of narcotics. Investigations later revealed that his passport had expired, making his stay in Kenya illegal.
Confirming the incident, Msambweni Police Commander Robinson Langat condemned the foreigner’s actions, saying such behavior towards law enforcement officers will not be tolerated. He added that the police had begun the process to deport the Dutch national after due legal procedures.
“Kenya is a country governed by laws, and anyone local or foreign who disrespects those laws will face consequences,” Langat said.
Horst has since apologized, saying he was battling stress and mental instability at the time of the incident. “I was not in my right state of mind; I had a psychotic episode and lacked food and water,” he said, identifying himself as Mufasa.
Despite his apology and plea to remain in Kenya, police insist that the deportation process will proceed as investigations conclude.
