Five police officers are in custody after being nabbed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly running a bribery racket targeting motorists along the Busia–Kisumu highway near Busia Town.

According to the EACC, the arrests came after a sting operation following numerous complaints from drivers and residents about rampant extortion and harassment by traffic officers in the area.

Investigators reportedly found the officers openly collecting bribes from motorists entering or leaving the border town often without conducting any form of vehicle inspection or law enforcement. The officers were said to be working in shifts of four to five, and using a Toyota Fielder as a makeshift mobile vault for the collected cash.

The suspects were later escorted to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for questioning and further investigation as part of the agency’s wider crackdown on police corruption and abuse of office.
