A major scandal has hit Maseno Police Station after eight officers were arrested over the mysterious disappearance of a Toyota Land Cruiser that had been under police custody.

The vehicle, which had been recovered and towed to the station after being abandoned at Maseno shopping centre on September 10, vanished from the station’s yard under unclear circumstances. Investigators now believe the very officers entrusted to safeguard the car orchestrated its theft.

On Monday evening, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi swooped in on Maseno, arresting the officers accused of involvement in the scheme. The suspects were transferred to Kisumu Central Police Station, where they remain in custody as further interrogations continue.

Police sources confirmed that a formal probe is underway to determine how a vehicle already booked into custody could disappear without trace, and whether the arrested officers acted alone or as part of a wider conspiracy.

The arrests have raised serious questions about accountability within the service, with senior officers said to be under pressure to restore public confidence in the Maseno station.
