Kenyans are staring at higher electricity bills this month after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) introduced new adjustments to power tariffs.

In a notice dated September 12, EPRA confirmed that households and businesses will now pay an additional Ksh4.42 per unit of electricity consumed in September.

The increment is driven by three main adjustments. First, the fuel energy cost component has been revised upwards, adding 3.60 shillings per unit to cover the rising cost of generating power from fuel-based stations.

Second, foreign exchange fluctuations have pushed the cost further up, with an additional 80.67 cents per unit added to September’s bills.

Finally, the Water Resource Management Authority levy has been adjusted slightly, contributing an extra 1.34 cents per unit.

EPRA explained that these charges are reviewed regularly in line with the Schedule of Tariffs, 2023, and reflect changes in fuel prices, the strength of the shilling against the dollar, and regulatory levies.

The new rates mean that Kenyans will feel an even tighter squeeze on household and business budgets already strained by a high cost of living.
