Seven people died on Friday morning after a 14-seater matatu lost control and overturned at Kamandura Junction in Kiambu County, along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The crash happened at around 9 a.m., killing several passengers on the spot and leaving others with serious injuries. The matatu, which was headed toward Nairobi, is reported to have veered off the road before flipping over.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as bystanders rushed to help, while emergency responders worked to extract bodies and rescue survivors trapped in the wreckage.

“It happened so fast. People were screaming for help,” said one eyewitness who was at a nearby market when the crash occurred.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and began clearing the area as investigations into the cause of the crash got underway. Preliminary reports point to possible speeding and loss of control, though authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure.

Kamandura Junction is known as a black spot, with locals blaming repeated accidents on poor road design and lack of enforcement of traffic laws.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary.
