The government has issued a stern warning to matatu operators following a series of tragic accidents that claimed the lives of several students traveling home for the Easter holiday. Authorities have expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents involving public service vehicles, particularly those transporting students.

According to reports, multiple road crashes occurred over the holiday period, with some resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. The incidents have raised alarms over reckless driving, overloading, and failure to observe traffic regulations, which have been cited as major causes of the accidents.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that the government will take strict action against matatu operators who violate traffic laws. He emphasized that road safety measures must be adhered to, especially when transporting school children and other passengers.

“We will not allow reckless drivers and rogue matatu operators to continue endangering the lives of innocent Kenyans. Any vehicle found flouting traffic rules will be impounded, and those responsible will face legal consequences,” Murkomen warned.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also been directed to enhance road safety enforcement, including conducting random inspections, cracking down on unroadworthy vehicles, and ensuring that public transport operators comply with set regulations.

Parents and school administrators have been urged to prioritize the safety of students by ensuring they travel in properly regulated vehicles. The government is also considering implementing stricter licensing requirements for matatus operating on school routes.

With road accidents being a leading cause of fatalities in Kenya, authorities are calling for collective responsibility among drivers, passengers, and enforcement agencies to enhance safety and prevent further loss of lives.
