The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has issued a strong warning to Kenyans as voter registration continues ahead of the upcoming by-elections.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, in a statement released on Thursday, November 20, cautioned the public against attempting double voter registration, calling it a serious electoral offence that attracts legal penalties. He explained that the Commission has deployed advanced digital systems capable of instantly detecting and cancelling duplicate entries.
“Anyone who tries to register twice will be flagged immediately. Double registration is a criminal offence,” Ethekon stressed.
He further urged Kenyans to provide accurate personal information during the registration exercise, noting that false details undermine the integrity of the electoral process. His remarks come amid reports alleging that some political actors are attempting to manipulate the voter register through duplicate listings or falsified information.
“We ask the public to avoid sharing incorrect information. It interferes with the credibility of the elections,” Ethekon added.
The Commission reiterated that safeguarding the voter register remains central to ensuring free, fair, and transparent by-elections.
