The government has reaffirmed its support for the Government-to-Government (G-to-G) fuel import framework, describing it as a key intervention that has stabilised Kenya’s fuel supply since its introduction.

Speaking during a press briefing, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said the model was adopted in response to the fuel crisis witnessed in 2022, when the country grappled with shortages and unpredictable price fluctuations.

He argued that the previous system of spot purchasing created room for manipulation by market players, which in turn distorted supply and increased pressure on foreign exchange.

Under the current arrangement, Mwaura explained, the government sources fuel directly from major international suppliers, effectively removing intermediaries from the process. This, he said, allows for advance price negotiations and better coordination of shipments.

According to him, the structured approach has improved planning within the supply chain and ensured a more consistent flow of petroleum products into the country over the past three years. He added that the system has also played a role in supporting the Kenyan shilling, easing inflationary pressure, and strengthening foreign exchange reserves.

Mwaura dismissed criticism from opposition figures as misleading, insisting the model has delivered tangible benefits to the economy.

However, the framework continues to face scrutiny from a section of opposition leaders led by Rigathi Gachagua, who have questioned its effectiveness and transparency.
