Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Joho, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the mining sector into a key driver of regional and national economic growth.

Speaking during a dialogue with the West Pokot Youth Association, CS Joho emphasized the Ministry’s focus on inclusive reforms that ensure fairness, profitability, and long-term sustainability particularly for artisanal and small-scale miners.

“We’re restructuring how the sector works. By organizing artisanal miners into cooperatives and establishing mineral aggregation centers, we aim to ensure they receive fair compensation and protection from exploitation,” he said.

Joho further noted that the Ministry is actively courting credible large-scale investors who can create jobs, pay taxes and royalties, and invest in critical infrastructure like roads and processing facilities.

He urged the youth to become champions of change by educating their communities on the transformative potential of mining not just as a source of income, but as a tool for reducing poverty and building resilience.

Principal Secretary for Mining, Kimtai Harry, also attended the session.
